Who we are
Organisation Overview
MapRI Initiative Uganda is a youth-led non-governmental organisation based in Kampala, Uganda, founded in 2020 by three graduates of Land Surveying and Geomatics from Makerere University.
Our journey began as Resilience Mappers, a youth-driven initiative that collected geospatial data on the accessibility of essential services in Kampala’s informal settlements to support COVID-19 response efforts. This work was funded through the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team Facebook Community Impact Micro-Grant Program.
Today, we harness satellite imagery, Earth observation technologies, GIS, open data, and community-driven mapping to address environmental and urban development challenges. By transforming complex spatial data into actionable intelligence, we support ecosystem conservation, climate resilience, sustainable urban development, and evidence-based decision-making.
Through collaboration with communities, governments, and development partners, we empower stakeholders to use geospatial data for more informed planning, resource management, and sustainable development across Uganda and beyond.
Mission
To improve livelihoods among residents in a sustainably managed environment through research and development, environmental conservation and restoration, and providing open data and geo-information.
Vision
We envision a sustainable Uganda where all residents have equal access to opportunities and services.
